Kichadowkabo David Pachano was born to Patahanoe, son of Obadiah Matches and Peggy, and Sarah Kwestakamaskow in the mid 1880’s and was baptized June 25, 1887. He had an older brother Jacob, an older sister Annie, a younger sister Hannah and a younger brother Wabinoskum. It is said Patahanoe married four times. He grew up in the Moar Bay area south of where Wemindji is now presently located. He married Betsy Duff, daughter of William Nabiyounasso Duff on September 19, 1908. Together they had nine children. In his younger years, he worked seasonally for the Hudson’s Bay Company on their supply boat picking up and ferrying supplies from Charlton Island. He also accompanied the Reverand Walton on his visits to other missions on the east coasts of James Bay and Hudson Bay. He was an excellent hunter who was nicknamed Meechimikodash as he was a good provider. When the beaver preserves were established and trapping reopened again the family relocated to the present day Pachano trapline. He became actively involved in the Anglican Church for many years as a catechist until his passing in 1967. |
