In the past, children were introduced to the hunt at an early age. They fished with their mothers on the ice. The men set nets and fish hooks under the ice and the women checked them. Even if the men didn`t get anything from the hunt, sometimes the women and children caught fish to eat. When they traveled, the men simply left the camp in the early morning. The women broke camp and followed the trail of their husbands. The teepee was made with a large rock as the hearth. The men left their toboggans where they wanted the camp to be set up and left to hunt caribou. When they returned from hunting, the women and the elders were already setting up the new camp. If many caribou were killed, a feast was held and the elders sang with their drums. Samson mentioned that they camped at many different places during one winter because they were nomadic. If the hunt was successful, there was great joy at the camp. |
