Job Kawapit

Job Kawapit was born in 1945 in the bush east of Whapmagoostui, Hudson Bay, Quebec. He grew up on the land and learned the ways of the Cree people. He taught Cree language and culture in Whapmagoostui for many years. He also an avid storyteller and is keen on the preservation of Cree stories and legends. Both Job and his wife Mary remain active in teaching young people the Cree language and traditional lifestyle during excursions out on the land and in the community.

The elder man with three sons

A man and his wife lived with their 3 sons and their wives. They had no food to eat and they became weak. The man of the family has a dream of the caribou that his sons will find when he instructs them to go to a lake.

The man and the caribou

There was a man long ago who went out to find caribou. He only took his gun and a small pot. He came upon a woman who told him that she has set up her camp on his way.

The man that was chasing caribou

A man chasing the caribou all night long and made them tired. As he arrived to the area where the caribou were resting from running the man talks to the caribou and asks them `Why are you doing sitting down? If I were you I would still be running.`

The young man who never killed anything

A young man is unhappy because he can never kill anything when he went hunting. Until one day he goes out and begins to cry, he cries to the point where he falls asleep. During his sleep all kinds of animals gathered around him. Each animal sits on a part of his body and say that when he hunts he will kill that kind of animal.
